Battlefield 1 Has A Pretty Cool Lord of the Rings Easter Egg

The grim tone of Battlefield 1 and its portrayal of the Great War seems like a tribute to the storytelling brute of J. R. R. Tolkien. So it didn’t seem surprising a Lord of the Rings easter egg found its way into the shooter.

If you’ve watched LOTR: Return of the King, then you no doubt remember the scene where Gandalf begins the lighting of the beacons to warn the realm of Gondor that the battle of Minas Tirith draws near. We’re treated to picturesque mountains showing each beacon set alight, an iconic scene in its own right.

Playing the Friends in High Places War Story opening mission will have you coming to grips with flying, but if you fray away from the tutorial for a moment and have a look around, you’ll find a pyre atop one of the peaks. Shooting it will set it alight and begin a chain like we’ve seen in the movie itself.

YouTuber DANNYonPC walked us through it:

We can only assume this is one of a variety of easter eggs available in Battlefield 1. Over time, gamers will no doubt uncover all the secrets DICE has hidden and we can assume they’ll be a lot more fleshed out than shooting a pyre.

Battlefield 1 is available now for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
